Title: Renewable Energy Grant Recommendation Program, 2008
Abstract:
In 2008, the Alaska Legislature established the Renewable Energy Grant Recommendation Program. The Alaska Energy Authority (AEA) solicited for competitive applications between September and November, 2008 from qualified applicants for the purpose of recommending grants for renewable energy projects. This data provides geospatial locations and general information for all of the submitted project proposals for Round 1 (October, 2008) and Round 2 (November, 2008). The Alaska Legislature document, SCS CSHB 152, available online at <http://www.legis.state.ak.us/PDF/25/Bills/HB0152Z.PDF>, outlines an act "Establishing a renewable energy grant fund and describing its uses and purposes; establishing a renewable energy grant recommendation program; for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2009, authorizing the Alaska Energy Authority to distribute renewable energy grants and setting out the procedures to be followed to award those grants; establishing a state heating assistance program in addition to the federal heating assistance program; establishing an Alaska Renewable Energy Task Force; and providing for an effective date."

    This dataset was compiled from the previous works listed above and their locations were converted to shapefiles using ArcGIS 9.3 software. Project locations and other proposal attributes listed in the "REFUND_Round1" and "REFUND_Round2" layers were drawn from the nearest community, according to the 2000 Census data, and information provided by the RE Fund proposal applicants. The "AK_energy_dev_regions" layer was created by merging several records of the original, 2000 Census Tracts in ARC/INFO Export (.e00) file provided by the U.S. Census Bureau.

How reliable are the data; what problems remain in the data set?

  1. How well have the observations been checked?

    Project locations were drawn from the nearest community, according to locations provided by the 2000 Census.

  2. How accurate are the geographic locations?

    Unknown. Community locations were drawn from the 2000 Census. However, the locations of statewide towns and villages listed in the Census were likely entered by latitude-longitude, digitized from USGS 1:250,000 quadrangle maps, and heads-up digitizing from USGS 1:250,000 maps based on relative positioning of digital hydrography and digital township lines. Many locations were later updated by snapping them to points in the USGSNAMES coverage obtained from USGS. See the "Lineage" section below for additional information.

    This dataset includes geospatial locations and general information for all of the submitted project proposals for Round 1 and Round 2 of the Alaska Renewable Energy Grant Recommendation Program, 2008.

    Polygon topology present and clean on appropriate data. Other data are line, point, or annotation data and do not require topologic relationships.
